The Comeback

Schoneboom Comes All the Way Back with "The Comeback"
A review by Johnny Nineball, reprinted by permission of The Times

With her latest beat poem, "The Comeback," Abby Schoneboom returns to peak form, demonstrating the virtuoso number play that established her as the premiere poet of her generation. Again tackling the subject matter of beating someone at the game of pool, Schoneboom infuses "The Comeback" with a breathless sense of drama that leaves us wondering until the last line if she will indeed beat her opponent this time. However, we needn't have worried, as she demonstrates with the confident final stanza that she was in control the whole time, toying with our emotions as easily as she has apparently toyed with her hapless opponent. In short, "The Comeback" finds Ms. Schoneboom literally and figuratively at the top of her game. What else can one say but "Bravo!"
