Comments on The Amazing Days Alive Calculator

zomgasm Wed 22 Mar 06 7:21 AM

fucken awesome!

abby Thu 23 Mar 06 4:10 PM

I know! The Days Alive Calculator uses about five million lines of code and there only four people alive who understand its inner workings.

John Sat 25 Mar 06 5:00 PM

It's true, it's a painstakingly long bit of code carefully dealing with leap years and so forth and I discovered only afterwards there's like a standard MySQL query that can get it for you in one simple line...but "there's always a harder way," that's our motto. Taking the easy way all the time leads straight to sloth and immorality and the next thing you know you're in the gutter pining for the soft days of your youth.

alex Sun 26 Mar 06 1:43 PM

Well, today is March 26, 2006 and you'll be born on December 31, 1969, seemingly. Best to check back some time after you've begun your existence on this plane.

hahaha thats funny

muchas gracias, javier!

Orre. Thu 20 Apr 06 1:05 PM

Wooah, amazing indeed gentlemen!

I see you put some work into it, but it wont function correctly forever, will it?

cliff Wed 26 Apr 06 11:17 AM

9,080 i think i can make 10,000

John Wed 26 Apr 06 9:39 PM

Yeah, you've got what, 3 years to go, so just make sure to look both ways before crossing the street and the odds are definitely in your favor.

As far as working correctly forever, well, forever is a pretty long time, and includes such events as the bloated supergiant red star sun consuming Mercury and Venus and scorching the Earth to a cinder in another few billion years, or should I say hundreds of billions of days, but I think right up until then it ought to keep working all right.

Om108x Sat 20 May 06 10:07 AM

Nice wee program! Thanks!

Now see where you are in the Shesha Life Map

Well, I'm not sure, I think I'm somewhere between the Torch of Life and the Heavenly Mansion...

Fr0 Sat 10 Jun 06 8:04 PM

That's pretty cool "After that, we're getting pretty damned optimistic" lol! :)

Carola Wed 14 Jun 06 2:33 AM

So glad I found you! A few months ago I was charmed to realize I my 20,000th day in the world would hit next week, and decided I'd have to party, but my math was wrong: I was getting ready to celebrate it 2 days LATE!!! So, next Wednesday, I'll clink my glass to toast you guys, too.

John S Wed 14 Jun 06 10:26 AM

Hi Carola, congratulations on your upcoming 20,000th! Just so you know how we count them, we count the day you were born as Day One, since that's your first day. Some people would count that as zero, so you'd be one day old on your second day on the planet, which is true too, but we're interested in how many days you've been here in total. Anyway, have a good day and congratulations again!

Jason G Tue 3 Oct 06 8:10 PM

Thanks, I got to celebrate my 10,000th day in style... and to think they day would have been just another day.
5 digits baby!

John Wed 4 Oct 06 11:33 AM

Happy Ten Thousandth, and many thousands more!

Adam Fri 27 Oct 06 12:07 PM

i did a guy from the year : 300. He was over 600,000 days old...

Serena Fri 27 Oct 06 3:47 PM

Wow. The oldest guy I ever did was 42.

christoph Wed 8 Nov 06 6:12 PM

Can anyone check the code? There is a glitch in the software. When i type in my bday it says this.
This is day number 9,959
for people born on August 4, 1979

Your 10,000th day will be on December 19 this year!

Your 10,000th day will be in 19 days, on November 27!

each time i check the second one moves ahead but it always says i have 19 days left, the same DATE of the true anniversary.

John Wed 8 Nov 06 7:37 PM

Eeee, that's crap, sorry! I'll definitely look into it!

John Wed 29 Nov 06 3:59 PM

Thanks to christoph for noticing that bug...I've had a chance now to get into the code and fix that problem, and also add a few little enhancements...

thanx a bunch Sat 2 Dec 06 3:57 PM

Your service is appreciated John!

Anonymous Personage Sat 17 Mar 07 7:30 PM

If that isn't interesting, i googled the internet, wondering if i could know how much days i've been alive. Surprise, i find this site.
It's pretty interesting, it's a different perspective to count the days rather than the years.

BUT.... What if i want to know how much days has Jesus been alive? It doesn't work, i think. And what's his birth date anyway.. 1st January, Year 0?

Mudzy Wed 11 Apr 07 11:19 PM

your comments filter is silly...
and if it is as silly than I bet your calculator isn't as accurate either...
found two other sites with the same calculations and they did not agree with yours...

John Thu 12 Apr 07 6:35 AM

Well, Mudzy, silly is our middle name here at Bonkworld, but I got the filter idea from php.net, and those guys, well, they're pretty silly too. But smart!

As for the calculator, I stand by it. Most similar calculators come up a day short because they count days old instead of days alive. There is a one-day difference. You're one day old on your second day on the planet. If you're born January 1, most people would look at January 2 and say OK 2-1 is 1. I say you've been on the planet 2 days. That's why it's "days alive" and not "days old". I haven't seen another days alive calculator out there. But there are actually things I don't know!

Mudzy Thu 12 Apr 07 7:06 PM

Error
LOL..........
Sorry, your comment has been shot down by our spam filter. Unfortunately, we've been forced to implement a fairly aggressive filter system thanks to the profusion of shameless idiots in the world.

seems to get shot down cause of the url I'm trying to post.. anyway around it.??

John Thu 12 Apr 07 7:16 PM

Hey, thanks for the link. I tried it and it seems like a very cool idea but apparently has a few bugs: I put in my birthday and it said:

You are -1853 years old and you were born on a Friday

So, something went wrong somewhere clearly. But I love the concept...

mer monkey Thu 26 Apr 07 11:45 PM

wicked cool. thanks!
and btw, everyone know Jesus was born on xmas, not nys :)

James Mon 30 Apr 07 12:09 PM

Today is my 34th B-Day. I did a simple calculation to figure out how many days I had been alive and came up with 12418.5. Then, I wondered if there was a calculator on the Internet to figure this out and found your site. You told me I was 12419 days, which was the same answer I figured, rounded up to the nearest whole number. Pretty good!

James Mon 30 Apr 07 12:16 PM

By the way, Bible scholars have figured out that Jesus was most likely born in September, not December! Assuming He was born on Sept. 30, 0000, he would be alive about 732,452 days at this point (this does take into account that He was dead in the grave for 3 days before rising again...)!

Cassie Mon 14 May 07 1:06 AM

Oh wow,
I figured out I would be exactly half my Moms age on August 19th of this year. Pretty exciting considering I'm only 15. Thanks, I love this.. I sat here for 3 hours one day messing around on it and I actually wasnt bored for once. [its my 5641st day alive..]

John Mon 14 May 07 4:38 PM

Hey Cassie, happy 5,641st! Glad you're having fun with the site!

Simon Thu 17 May 07 8:41 PM

Awesome. It gave me a way of knowing how many days left until I outlive my Father, who sadly died in 1966 aged just 48.
June 5, 2007 (17,815!) is my big day, and now I'm sure.
Thanks so much.

Abby Mon 21 May 07 12:19 PM

Glad you liked it, Simon, and sorry to hear about your old man. Hopefully, you'll make it to at least 25,000!

scott Tue 29 May 07 10:22 PM

If anybody cares- most scholors agree that our calendar based on the birth of Jesus is probabally off by 4 to 6 years, likely being born around 4BC to 6BC, as well as the fact that He was probabally born in either the Spring or Fall.
BTW- celabrating my 13,441st.

Taylore Sun 1 Jul 07 9:44 PM

cool it told me about some things I didn't know!

HappySarah Fri 20 Jul 07 1:32 PM

Wow!! It helped me with my math homework!! Thanks!!

LuisLeote Wed 19 Sep 07 1:55 PM

Thank you for this service. Really original and useful. Promise I will use it often

emily Sun 28 Oct 07 6:13 AM

thank you very much i will tell all my friends and family about it.It is the best website ever!

Sean Tue 13 Nov 07 10:47 PM

I am turning 50 soon. I wanted to know the exact amount of days I will have lived when I finally am called home at 102. Thanks

Mitchell Mon 19 Nov 07 6:50 PM

Just going back to that Jesus days thing. He wasn't actually born on Christmas day, as in Dec 25th. He was actually born some time in the spring, but because of the way their calendar was a bit different the church changed it. Nobody knows his actual birthday.

Jesus Tue 20 Nov 07 7:48 PM

I do. And now I know how many days old I am. Thanks be to you.

John Tue 20 Nov 07 8:15 PM

Thanks, Jesus. And here I was thinking it was kinda funny how people really think there was a real Jesus who had a specific birthday and all, and the guy SHOWS UP HERE! Now that's the power of the Internet. Praise Jesus. Although I reckon he'd get too embarrassed by too much praise. Except maybe on his birthday.

Lesley Fri 23 Nov 07 12:32 PM

I simply love your website! Thanks to you, I once again feel that grad school is worth the effort. Well, I've gtg and write those three papers that are due next week!

btw, today is 16,105 for me.

John Wed 5 Dec 07 9:51 PM

Thanks Lesley, glad you're having fun here!

monocle barbie Wed 26 Dec 07 3:25 AM

You are off by 1, it is a common mistake. The counter is counting the day you are born as 1, instead of 0. Therefore it is not saying how old you are, or how long you have been on this earth. It would be more accurate if you wold change that. Please do!

John Thu 27 Dec 07 6:33 AM

The counter methodology is entirely intentional, I assure you! It is called the "Days Alive" calculator, not the "Days Old" calculator, for a reason. It is the number of distinct days you have been on the planet, including your first one, and including today. That does make it one more than an age calculation, since you wouldn't be "one day old" until 24 hours into the game. But the day you were born counts as a day that you were alive here at Bonkworld.

Jiraiya Tue 5 Feb 08 6:47 AM

Nice work Abby and John! Great program. I have a programming assignment at University to basically make what you have here, and all I can say is "My I hate leap years!" - just got it all finished, but leap years perplexed me for a good ten-fifteen minutes! Nice work, and thanks for the great 'testing partner'! ^_^

MR Mon 11 Feb 08 8:08 PM

I have been married 14502 days. We celebrate every day!

John Tue 12 Feb 08 10:11 PM

Eeeee, you know I don't think I ever thought of using the Days Alive Calculator to calculate the number of days since other things. Congratulations on such a fine run of marriage!

5 million lines of code rofl, this isn't that hard...I wrote a program in Pascal 7 that will tell you the day of the week when you enter the date, and it took me like 5 hrs...only because i'm not that good.

Matt Tue 15 Apr 08 10:21 PM

Awesome site! actualy celebrated my moms 15,000 yesterday! thanks for the effort.

Pam Sat 26 Apr 08 10:55 AM

LeighAnn Wed 30 Apr 08 3:34 PM

Cool program! Thanks, my daughter wanted to know how many days she'd been alive, this site was easy to find and super easy to use, even for someone who's been around a mere 3009 days.

Got any more we should look up ?

TK Thu 26 Feb 09 3:47 PM

you are dumb i could tell you that too ,this is how it works, they start on yur birthday and add 360 every time it passes it again up to the last one then adds 360 more, checks too see how many till the closest birthday and subtracts it

John Thu 26 Feb 09 4:13 PM

Yep, that's the basic idea all right TK. Just make it 365 instead of 360 or you'll get into trouble, and don't forget to check for leap years. Or just use our machine and save some time!

TK Thu 26 Feb 09 8:10 PM

so i geuss 5 ppl know how it works now

your teensy program is the first one to come up on google when i type "how many days been alive." congrats!

ps: nice code :)

Paul Sat 25 Apr 09 10:33 AM

An astonding piece of work. Kudos to the designers, makes me feel so much better then programs telling me when I'm leaving this world! Just a thought I have been using your program for another purpose, which is to figure out how long loved ones lives were that have since passed. Maybe you could offer a date of death to your program which would be omplefelu bypassable if your only trying to figure out your days of life. Just a opinon you have created a seemingly simple yet very complex program that along with your poem allows me to realize the fragile nature of things. Great job!!!!!!!!!

Angela Sun 3 May 09 1:47 AM

God has given me 7,000 days to be thankful for! :)

It's been tradition for us to celebrate our kids' 1,000 day, 5,000 day, etc. I knew my youngest's 5,000 day was coming up soon and thanks to your calculator I found that it's this Friday! Saved me a lot of calculating - Thanks! We're celebrating by surprising her with 5,000 xmas lights strung up in the house. Crazy I know - we're just kids at heart! For our son's we woke him with 5,000 tickertapes, each with a fun note on it about his life. Yeah - I know - we're over the top. But you only live once! Celebrate it!

tidy Tue 25 Aug 09 11:23 AM
